Turning a school photograph into a catalyst for change with Dove's The Crown Act
Dove has long championed real beauty — but millions of Black women and girls continue to experience discrimination simply because of how they wear their natural hair.
Research revealed that 84% of Black and mixed-heritage women felt pressured to change their hair for school photographs, while 28% skipped school picture day altogether. A moment intended to preserve childhood memories had instead become a reminder of exclusion.
I conceived the idea Reclaiming School Picture Day — inviting Black women to retake the school photographs they never felt able to have. In an intimate documentary, eight women reclaimed the portrait they had been denied, wearing their natural hair with pride for the first time.
The campaign transformed an overlooked issue into a national conversation, challenging race-based hair discrimination and helping accelerate policy change across UK schools.
